SIBLAC Seeks Review of Hydropower Projects in Sikkim
Itanagar,27th August,2026: The Sikkim Bhutia Lepcha Apex Committee (SIBLAC) has urged the Centre to reconsider new and proposed hydropower projects in Sikkim following the recent devastating floods in neighbouring Nepal. SIBLAC convenor Tseten Tashi Bhutia called for an independent, time-bound assessment of existing and proposed projects, focusing on their environmental, geological, seismic and social impacts. The committee said the Himalayan region is ecologically fragile and requires careful development planning. It also highlighted Sikkim’s past experience with disasters, including the destruction of the Teesta III hydropower project during the 2023 glacial lake outburst flood. SIBLAC stressed that development should not compromise ecological stability or community safety.
