The Treasure Chest Cloud

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope hasrevealed a remarkable cosmic structure called the “Treasure Chest” in theCarina Nebula. Located about 39 light-years from the powerful Eta Carinaesystem, this cometary globule is a dense cloud of gas and dust containing acompact cluster of extremely young stars. Webb’s infrared observations showthat many of these stars are still surrounded by dusty circumstellar discs,important sites for future planet formation. The cluster contains roughly 70stars, including a massive young O-type star. Powerful radiation and stellarwinds from Eta Carinae and nearby massive stars have sculpted the cloud’sdistinctive shape. The discovery provides astronomers with valuable insightinto how stars form and develop in harsh cosmic environments.
